Students at DRBU strive to develop their wisdom and compassion. To this end, students try their best in regulating their conduct and making their hearts peaceful and harmonious. Students observe a vegetarian diet and a harmless way of life. The basic elements of this lifestyle are: not to kill (including use of pesticides, etc.), not to steal, not to engage in sexual misconduct, not to utter false speech (lying; cruel, lewd, or abusive speech; and gossip), and not to take intoxicants (alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, etc.). Since DRBU is located within a Buddhist monastery, clothing should be neat and modest. Men and women are also usually separated to allow for fewer distractions. These general guidelines create an atmosphere of support and harmony within the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas.
