This summer in a tranquil monastic setting, Dharma Realm Buddhist University will host a three-week intensive immersion experience in the Buddhist tradition. Students will read, reflect upon, and discuss a Buddhist Sutra.

The program will follow a traditional monastic lifestyle of work, study, and meditation designed to calm the mind, strengthen the body, and prepare the spirit for insight and understanding.

Classes will be led by faculty of Dharma Realm Buddhist University, both lay and monastic, with informal discussions balancing the more formal classes of the day. Time will be set aside for quiet reading, writing, and personal reflection.

The first week (August 1-8) will consist of an introductory week orienting participants to life in a monastery and the study of the Shurangama Sutra.

The second week (August 8-15) consists of a week devoted to the recitation of the name of Guan Shi Yin, the Bodhisattva of Great Compassion. We will be chanting and studying the chapter devoted to Guan Yin Bodhisattva, the Universal Door Chapter of the Lotus Sutra.

The third week (August 16-22) will relocate to the Oregon Coast Range for a five-day chan/zen meditation intensive. (Please note that the Oregon week will involve camping outside, go to the Oregon FAQ for more details. Participants are welcome to also spend this time practicing in the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas.)

Instructors / Speakers

Rev. Heng Sure was ordained as a Buddhist monk in 1976. For the sake of world peace, he undertook an over six hundred mile pilgrimage from South Pasadena to Ukiah, repeatedly taking three steps and one bow to cover the entire journey. In the entire two years taken to make the pilgrimage, he observed a practice of total silence. Rev. Heng Sure has an M.A. in Oriental Languages from UC Berkeley and a Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. He serves as the Managing Director of the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery and teaches on the staff at the Institute for World Religions. He is actively involved in interfaith dialogue and in the ongoing conversation between spirituality and technology.

Doug Powers holds an M.A. from GTU and a B.A. and an M.A.T. from the University of Redlands. As an early disciple of Master Hua, he has been attending sessions for over thirty years and leading the summer program Guan Yin Sessions for over ten years. He is Vice President of Dharma Realm Buddhist University (DRBU) and currently teaches Western Philosophy and Psychology.
David Rounds has been the main translator/coordinator for the Shurangama Sutra over the last 6 years and has given numerous talks at retreats concerning the Shurangama Sutra.  A musician, novelist, and former high school English teacher, David Rounds is skilled in explaining the principles within the Shurangama Sutra come to life.  He currently is the editor of the IWR Journal, Religion East & West.
